Ana Fox-Hodess & I organized two roundtable discussions addressing how art workers can unionize, featuring Fred Glass, Matt Kennedy, Nat Naylor, and Peter Olney. Watch videos of the two talks using the links below:

Why unions?

Fred Glass (center), labor activist, CCSF educator, and author of From Mission to Microchip: A History of the California Labor Movement describes 10 key moments in labor history.

Peter Olney (left), former Organizing Director, ILWU explains the two essential elements of running a successful unionizing campaign: heat and hammer.

How can you unionize your workplace?

Matt Kennedy (center), CCA union organizing committee member, shares what motivated CCA staff to form a union, and how they carried out their organizing campaign.

Nat Naylor (left), OPEIU Local 29 union organizer, which represents SFMOMA and SFAI, among others, adds to Matt's experience with information for organizers from a professional union perspective.

Throughout the four-hour event, Nat also hosted a Q&A booth to answer questions about unionizing.

Along with the publications, handmade buttons with various pro-union slogans were distributed to attendees.

Artwork from the Oakland teachers’ strike was generously lent by the Oakland Education Association and Rumi Koshino.

Risograph-printed posters spelling out the word "ORGANIZE" were displayed in the windows facing YBCA's public space, Yerba Buena Gardens, and Mission Street.

Organizing Power: Unions + Art/Nonprofit Workers was commissioned by the YBCA Fellows program. From 2018-2019, I was a YBCA Fellow addressing the question “How might we reimagine political power?”
